What does a couples therapy session look like at Hypnohelpclinic?

Solution focused therapy for couples is not at all like couples counselling that's showing currently on BBC2. It's an extremely exciting, dynamic and effective form of therapy, regardless of what challenge brings you to see me. Which is why it’s becoming one of the most utilised forms of therapy for couples who want to repair their relationship quickly.

Curious about how the first session of solution focused therapy will go?


After our initial free consultation I will explain to you exactly what is going on from a neuroscience perspective. This part is factual, and enlightening and can be applied to all areas of our life and not just our relationships. Anxiety, depression, OCD and anger are problems for much more of the population than we think! Most clients can recognise some of the traits in themselves.


So do we talk about our fights?


It may seem counter intuitive but no! I don’t need to know what he, or she has done, not done, said or not said. In solution focused Couples therapy I will gently guide you away from discussing the past or indeed arguing and bickering. When we discuss what you want, rather than what you don’t want our brains start to get creative and finding solutions to our needs and wants.


What do we talk about in Solution focused couples therapy?


I might ask you, what you first found appealing about your partner? What made him or her more than just a casual date.? So often, we become embroiled in our fight, we forget what made us fall in love with our sweetheart in the beginning! Believe it or not we didn’t fall in love because of one quality, but a series of small things that cemented our beliefs that our honey was the one true love. And so, the route out of the fight, is small things!


How quickly does Solution focused therapy work?


That depends entirely on the couple, however my record to date was a wonderful couple who visited me and after one session, couldn’t wait to get home and had a cheeky kiss in the car park!

Some couples alternate between couples therapy and individual, if one of them wants to work on something that may be blocking their progress, we can book for an individual solution focused therapy session for confidence issues or anxiety, depression or anger.


Do you ever take sides?


I do take one side always! That’s the third side and that of the relationship! I’m your relationships cheerleader. Also because we don’t discuss the past, I have no information regarding your part in the relationship.


What about if we have very different personalities?


I work with all different personality types and it’s my role to match your type. Couples are rarely exactly the same! I will ensure that each person gets the same amount of time, If one party is finding speaking up more challenging, I may ask questions in a different way, it will always be solution focused and looking at what we want, rather than what we don’t want.


What about the homework?


You will be asked to do homework between sessions, but the good news is, you get to decide how much you want to do. This will include listening to a hypnosis recording individually or together. This will help to shift those bad habits and start to find solutions to our challenges.
